poverty-2

Writer talks about the wondering and homeless tribes and their lives, after reading that all, we realise that their condition is worse than some downtrodden in our society. As let them be outside the villages, they have their place, but these tribes lack that too. I have even personally seen the problems of the tribe called "katkari" found mostly in parts of Mumbai.

Now when we are aware of "money issue", let us turn to the problems relating that. as swami said in previous post," The determination shown by these "ordinary souls" is in no way less to that of a "great" one..." he is right, i appreciate his sensitivity.

However, how long they have to put all their courage, power, brains and thus, lives, in just search of food, which is also not available enough!

It is just not about poverty, but even for the questions it breeds, it can be education, marriage system, health, superstitions, and a overall existence of those..

Some more facts:-

In the survey, some activists ask a man to meet and interview his wife; he allowed them but told them to wait for 10 minutes. As was surprising, activists asked,’ why she needs 10 minutes?' Her husband replied," as she has only one saree, which is washed and kept out for drying today, so is nude inside the hut"
As a woman, I can understand the calamity of this fact, how difficult it must be for her.

I still remember a female being threatened and whipped badly by her relatives, husband, brother-in-law, and father-in-law, on a minute doubt of adultery on her. Which was because she gave birth to TWINS !! pity!!

The males and boys of such tribes are FREE MODELS for police to try their muscular power. They spend all of their life in shifting their hut from one place to another, robbing something or being caught by police and crushed badly.

Hi Harshada
You have hit upon the most volatile and most neglected or ignored topic – POVERTY – by the civil society.
To my mind poverty is of two types:
One: that is accepted happily by choice as a way of life by the adivasis – aborigine tribes – and the sanyasis, if there are any.
Other Poverty is the residue of the civilised societies across the globe and across the time (history). What you are talking of is this residue or waste.
Please avoid comparing your lifestyle and standards of life with that of the aborigines, the tribal, adivasis that are still living on this globe, not only in India, from the beginning of TIME; they have survived the onslaught by the civilised society; in India since Vedic society.
If interested, you may go through my paper BUDDHA AND THE ART AND SCIENCE OF KARVI HUT (http://remi.desouza.googlepages.com/warlihouse) and other papers on my blog< http://remidesouza.blogspot.com/>.

Hi Harshada,

Further to my previous comment, I refer to ‘Katkari’ tribe. I had been in contact with them for some time. Katkaris, traditionally, had been the suppliers of herbal medicines to ‘kariyana’ shops of Mumbai City (then Bombay), perhaps hundred years ago. From what I gather they belong to best botanists ever known. Now their forest are lost – lost to build cities like Mumbai, besides other causes. From my native place in Konkan to Mumbai, I have been traveling for many decades. What I observe is the forests in the Westen Ghats deplete more and more as you reach near Mumbai. The highly forested Raigad District now leaves deforested barren hills. The consequence is the loss of the Skills of the Tribal People, one of them Katkaris.

If you speak to Katkaris, you may come to know that they claim to be descendants of so-called monkeys – Hanuman, Sugriv, Vali etc. of the times in Ramayana. Studies reveal that they had migrated from South India. Like any other tribe, they to have gender equality unlike the civilized societies: so also there is no prostitution unless forced by the elite class or elite castes of civilized societies. India miserably lacks anthropological studies of the aborigine tribes – adivasis – of India, who I believe is the World Heritage to costly to be lost.

Best wishes,
Remi

@ remi,
you are right, even as far as i know, they call themselves descendants of hanuman..( if you even go by their face stucture)
well, but remi, their life doesn't at all seem moving, they are , where they were initially, just the so called "work" is different, but the whole insecurity of life is same.
hmm.. long sigh..
