Experience
It was
I boarded in local train’s ‘ladies compartment’ with one of my acquaintance.
As it was not time of peak hours, I somehow got fourth seat and of course, I adjusted myself there.
Before I could take a book from my bag and start reading it, I suddenly heard a mellow voice. I turned my head towards it with some curiosity.
There was a girl of some 22-24 , wearing a good branded pair of jeans and tummy-showing top on it, with very heavy make-up and amazing accessories. She even had ‘black-berry’ cell phone in her one hand and some stickers of INDIAN FLAG in another. She caught everyone’s attention by saying hello and started her babble.
It was : ‘hello, I’m from so and so college, we are selling this flags as social service. HANDICAPPED people, who cannot talk, walk, see and are with some abnormalities, make these. You have to pay Rs.2/flag(then, she went to window to spit the chewing gum she was chewing before .. she comes back now again) this money will help those poor in their education, we are not getting a penny also out of it. Please …. Excuse me (she now got a phone call, which she sticks for more than 10 minutes and comes back again) so.. What I was saying? Please buy these. It will be ‘punya ka kaam’
As I knew nobody would entertain her, I asked her for 20 stickers and bought them to initiate, then everybody (women in compartment) bought one or more from her.( rule in the ladies compartment, everyone will rush towards the same vendor, where there is more crowd)
As I was amazed, I thought of communicating with the girl. Here is the conversation as it is.
I. Are you doing it for some NGO?
SHE: YES
I: okey well
She: actually, we, I mean all of us joint the NGO (pointing towards her other friends in compartment) as we are on the edge of placements
In addition, this is cool। Looks cool on RESUME
I smiled, as I could not bear it longer.
SOCIAL SERVICE - because it looks cool on RESUME
Is it so easy?
Does the words ‘social service’ just mean selling some stickers?
People devoted their whole life for others; this is something, which can be called as ‘social service’
Now-a-days, act of helping someone while crossing the road, giving place to old aged in bus, giving food to beggars, is also being called as ‘social service’
Is that all it is about?
The mentioned examples are not of social service, it is of our duty as human being.
We think it is ‘special’ because we ‘normally’ WE don not see people doing it.
PS. the word 'handicapped' hurt me as i think they should call 'differently abled' specially, when they call their work 'social work'.

someone studies for pure learning. someone studies to prove herself to someone else. someone studies to get access to jobs. who is right?
if someone claims to do social service which doesnt fit your definition, are they wrong?
you may feel deceived for others did not match your expectations, but there's nothing wrong. just a question of taking views.
@ kartik
i'm not anyone not only to comment on their views but also judge their 'social service'
but i really feel, that nobody should use the words 'social service' for the usual activities, which according to me are general duties.
moreover, when you do smething for your purpose, you should not define it as 'social service' and have fake proud of it.
and important reason to write it was that 'when you have your own needs so much squandering. you can cut off them and do social service .. as even it will look cool on resume...
may be i'm being very aggressive with the issue.
and specially, i DON'T have any expectation from anyone.
different people have different preceptions in doing the same thing..though u may not agree to it always..in this case..though she was just doin it to get a mention on her resume..i feel..she indirectly did a good job..coz there are a lotta ppl who dont even buy a flag on independence day..at least this act wil enable SOME ppl to hav a flag(at least) in their homes wich reminds them of our freedom struggle..
@ kasim
correct... but only this Perspective will predominate over the overall incompetence and apathy?
How long we will be just “satisfied”?
see... i never deny that it's better than nothing..
but still....
